As originally reported in Macau TDM, the Macau Social Welfare Bureau plans to hire foreign nurses who have at least 3 years of experience into SAR to cope with the shortage of manpower.
The urgency was due to the rapidly growing population of Macau. It is estimated that the elderly aged above 65 years old will account for 20.7% of Macau total population in 2036.
The bureau also recognizes and understands that local nurses working for the private sector tend to leave their position whenever the government launches an exam to recruit them. Yet, a lot of participants in the press conference shared their worries regarding the welfare of the local nurses.
Despite of the shortage being urgent, the agency promises to implement it moderately, so that they will be able to protect and preserve the welfare of local nurses.

The bureau director says they will import nurses who have three years’ experience from elsewhere in order to tackle the shortage of manpower in the SAR.
“We will moderately import nurses from elsewhere to work in Macau under the principle of not affecting local nurses’ welfare and employment situation here. We will work closely with the Human Resources Office and the Health Bureau. We will also make sure that all imported nurses have three years of working experience and that they meet the required the education standards”, said by Mr. Iong Kong Io (Head of the Social Welfare Bureau).
